Hulu Now Has More Than 25 Million Subscribers, Sets Sights on Even More Content
Hulu’s been working on expanding its library of content for quite some time, which does involve grabbing some streaming rights from the previously-held Netflix.
Hulu has announced that it has more than 25 million subscribers, an impressive number all by itself. But when you factor in the fact that the bump in numbers is almost a 50 percent increase year-over-year, and the fact that subscribers are all in the United States, that’s quite the milestone. According to the company, a big reason why so many people are subscribing to the platform is due to its exclusive content options.
That includes shows like 30 Rock, ER, Bob’s Burgers, among others, all of which are only available on Hulu. Most of those shows were previously on Netflix, but Hulu has been working behind-the-scenes to grab those streaming rights from competing platforms. Interestingly enough, according to data populated by 7Park Data, most Hulu subscribers (97 percent of streams!) are watching licensed streams rather than original content. And 89 percent of subscribers are watching programming from other networks, licensed shows, before watching an original series on Hulu.
As a quick comparison, Netflix has 58 million subscribers in the United States — and more than 70 million additional subscribers outside of the U.S.. So while Hulu is obviously seeing some big gains in its subscriber base, it still has a long way to go before it catches up to its biggest competitor.
But things are looking bright for Hulu, because Hulu is going to get a huge boost from the likes of Disney. Bob Iger, the company’s CEO, has publicly stated that it plans on boosting Hulu’s content even more. However, that can only happen if Disney’s planned acquisition of Fox goes through. If that does, Disney will have a controlling stake in Hulu and therefore can start investing even more into the platform.
Where does Disney+ come in, you may ask. If you’ll recall, Disney plans on launching its own streaming network this year. Hulu won’t be carrying any original Disney series, at least, not right out of the gate. Disney will more than likely keep Hulu as a place for more adult series, along with the aforementioned licensed programming.
So, big news for Hulu. There are still rumblings that that the platform is going to slim down its live TV options at some point, and focus more on the licensed programming and on-demand content.
