What Are Your Expectations from the 2019 iPhones?

With the iPhone X in 2017, Apple launched a smartphone that was ahead of its time. In 2018, Apple only made some basic improvements to that same formula and launched the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. While some of these improvements are notable, they are overall very iterative in nature.

Apple follows a tick-tock policy where a major iPhone release is followed by an ‘s’ refresh that focuses on speed and camera. The iPhone XS was no different. But 2019 needs to be different. With smartphone sales slowing down and heavy competition from Chinese OEMs, Apple simply cannot afford to sit back and release another iterative iPhone upgrade in 2019.

For the 2019 iPhones, there’s are a lot of areas that Apple can improve upon. The rapid pace of innovation and development of Chinese OEMs means that Apple no longer enjoys a technological lead that it had earlier. I am not talking about the usual upgrades like improved camera and processor. They are a given with every iPhone refresh. But they are not going to be enough for the 2019 iPhones. Apple needs to offer more than that if it wants to stop the decline in iPhone sales.

For starters, at the very least, Apple should bump the minimum storage on the 2019 iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max successors to 128GB. There’s absolutely no excuse for Apple to launch a $999 smartphone with 64GB of storage space in 2019. And if not, the company should simply bundle free 50GB of iCloud storage space with the phones.

The 2019 iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max should also be available in a wider range of colors. The basic Silver, Space Gray, and Gold colors are not enough in this day and age. Almost every other Android OEM has launched its flagship smartphone in a variety of attractive colors and finishes, and Apple should take some cue from them for 2019 iPhones. There’s no reason for the company to not offer the 2019 iPhone XS in the same variety of colors as the iPhone XR.

The 2019 iPhones are going to come with a better camera than the 2018 iPhone XS. But that’s not going to be enough. Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro and Google Pixel 3 are beating the iPhone in the camera department by a significant margin and Apple really needs to step up its game in this department. Its Smart HDR algorithm has not turned out to be as good as Google’s HDR+ algorithm and the company needs to work on improving it even further to make it capture magical photos like Google’s Pixel series.

The company also needs to consider bundling an 18W power adapter in the box with the 2019 iPhones. Even budget Android devices are now shipping with a fast charger in their box and it is shameful of Apple to ship a $999 smartphone with a 5W charger in its box. It should take a cue from its 2018 iPad Pro lineup and switch to USB-C instead of Lightning, though the chances of that happening are very slim. If Apple does make the switch, it could offer support for external monitors with the 2019 iPhones which should make them a great productivity tool to have on the go.

There are a lot of other areas that Apple can improve its 2019 iPhones in to make them a compelling upgrade. But we want to hear from our readers as to what their expectations are from the 2019 iPhones? What improvements would compel you to make the upgrade?
