Waze for iOS Updated with Apple CarPlay Support

Waze CarPlay

With iOS 12, Apple has introduced one major improvement to CarPlay: it has allowed support for third-party navigation apps. Google Maps has already been updated with CarPlay support on iOS 12 launch day and now Waze has rolled out an update with to add CarPlay support as well.

Once you update the Waze app on your iPhone from the App Store, the app will automatically show up when you activate CarPlay. You can then use Waze app to report traffic issues, navigate to places, receive alerts related to traffic, and more.

“We’re excited to bring the power of the Waze community right into drivers’ car consoles with Apple CarPlay,” said Jens Baron, Waze Platform Strategy. “This enables us to bring to life one of our users’ most requested integrations, giving them the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of the Waze app on the larger Apple CarPlay display.”

Due to system limitations in iOS 12, users will not be able to set Waze as their default navigation app in CarPlay. This stands true even if they delete the Apple Maps app from their iPhone. Due to this, one will have to manually launch the Waze app every single time instead of being able to simply use the voice command button their vehicle’s steering wheel for navigation purposes.

Nonetheless, given just how bad Apple Maps is, I am sure iPhone users would be happy that they now at least have the option of using Google Maps or Waze when using CarPlay.
